A newly formed studio management company led by Piers Read and backed by investor Panther Securities PLC, the listed company on London’s Stock Exchange has purchased Merton Studios from FremantleMedia with the intention of reinventing it into the UK’s elite studio. The deal was concluded earlier this week following months of negotiations between the consortium and Fremantle Media, with a £5m deal rumoured to have secured the freehold & all of its contents. Panther Securities PLC is owned by majority shareholder and Chairman Andrew Perloff, who is well known in the financial sector.

The studio has been the home of ‘The Bill’, produced by Talkback Thames, since 1983. Since ITV decommissioned the production in May this year, operations at the 220,000 square foot studio have gradually been closed down. This is the first time the studio complex can be commercially exploited – until now The Bill being shot onsite has drastically restricted availability to independent Producers to utilise the outstanding facilities on site. This is no longer the case, with the studio now immediately available for hire. This includes two sound stages, that can be utilised as either set build or television entertainment shows. The studio is currently installing state of the art, 3D galleries to provide the industry with a cutting edge facility that can also broadcast live content. The studio gallery will also cater to HD & SD productions.

In addition it has over 50 purpose built sets including some of the hardest to find locations. These include a Prison Police Station, Court Room, Pub, Hospital and exterior street sets, which makes the studio totally unique compared to any other in the UK. There is also an industrial kitchen on site and over 100 production offices available for hire that the studio also plans to undertake leases at with media orientated companies. Also included within the purchase price is HD shooting kit & HD post production facilities as well as over 45,000 costume pieces. It is expected that the studio will attract both the event and photographic industries too.

The new studio management company not yet named and currently in the process of being branded, will be run by Managing Director Piers Read & fellow Director John Brennan. Both men bring highly relevant experience to benefit the studios operation. Piers Read is a former location manager who owns Unitbase.co.uk, one of the industry’s leading location agencies, that since 2003 has successfully ran several production bases in London as alternatives to conventional studio based productions. Unitbase’s clients include Hackney Empire, Westfield London, British Waterways, National Car Parks and Land Securities PLC for the purposes of commercial filming.

Piers has also enjoyed a successful freelance career working as a Line Producer at some of the leading independent production companies, whose credits include Peep Show and The Inbetweeners, working most recently with So Television.

John has been Managing Director of leading hire company Procam Television since 1998 and is a major shareholder. Since its formation in 1991, Procam Television has become one of the leading film & television hire facilities in the UK, working with most major broadcasters, production companies and corporate blue-chip clients both in this country and worldwide. The company moved to a new purpose-built 12,000 sq. ft. facility in London’s Battersea in April 2009 and also has a UK associate company in Manchester. John was instrumental in opening further associated companies in Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. John will drive the technical expertise behind the permanent High Definition 3D TV studio gallery set ups in Stages 1 & 2.

RocknRolla - South Dock
Want a gangster film set in London? Queue Guy Richie and RocknRolla! He wanted his bad guy to be holed up on a huge lavish yacht but with an urban backdrop. Where better then than South Dock, providing simply some of the best views of Londons financial district, Canary Wharf.

In The Loop - Swakeleys Park (Vyners House)
Swakeleys Park is a huge estate, within which is a stunning Jacobean manor house. The main house was used for some interior Downing Street locations, however it was the modern office building on site - Vyners House, that proved to be a great success for the production, becoming a perfect location for the MPs offices. 4321 - Westfield London
Noel Clarke, loved this location and loved that he was able to use such a high profile property in such fantastic ways. Not only did the production get some great action scenes along the Southern Terrace, but they were also able to put together some of the title sequence by using the Atrium as well as the North West entrance. Harry Brown - Regents Canal
The Micheal Caine movie Harry Brown, needed that sinister and slightly edgy location to go with this raw UK film all about revenge. UK born, Caine, takes it on himself to go after the gangs that have taken up residence in his neighbourhood. The production used a stretch of the Regents Canal to provide the location with the atmosphere that they needed. It was a great success!

Royal Hospital Haslar
This hospital is screaming out for a large production to take the opportunity to use a massive and wide ranging location. Full of hospital and institutional style buildings, great for period productions. These are juxtaposed with modern areas, great for drama or feature films. Industrial buildings, town houses and office space are also on site, which outlines the scope that is on offer at this location.

Fantastic Riverside Location
Here is one of Unitbase.co.uk's other Rediscovered locations; this fantastic wharf building on the river Thames. Loads of our regulars will know this location well as it has been popular for the last two years, however, it still could be a great Dragons Den type location. Great views of the river along with traditional wooden beams and exposed brick provide bundles of character.

Castle in Bury St Edmunds
This castle in Bury St Edmunds is completely empty and an amazing and historic property. Surrounded by acres of grounds, plus some beautiful ornate gardens, this property has an amazing amount of possibilities for filming, photography or even bespoke events. Top Gear in a Spin at Westfield London

Unitbase.co.uk undertook a pretty big challenge last week, by getting the biggest car show on TV together with London's biggest indoor shopping Centre. When Top Gear called Unitbase.co.uk, instead of being worried about what Clarkson, May and Hammond would get up to, London’s leading location agency, revelled in the challenge. The BBC show needed a huge underground car park and Unitbase.co.uk needed not to look any further than there exclusive location; Westfield London.

Top Gear spent a full day at Westfield London filming stunt driving on the bottom floor of their huge underground parking facility! However instead of letting the three presenters behind the wheels of the old style Mini Coopers that were being featured, a group of stunt drivers took over the driving and performed power slides and hand brake skids! It was quite a spectacle and will look fantastic on screen when the popular car show returns to BBC2 later this year.

Westfield London have employed Untibase.co.uk for over a year as their exclusive filming and photographic agents and in that time there has been a multitude of fantastic productions have taken place at the centre! The New Sherlock Holmes hits UK TV’s

Again the BBC have surpassed themselves and produced another great crime drama, based on the old tale of Sherlock Holmes. Hartswood Films for BBC Wales cast Benedict Cumberbatch as a modern day Sherlock, along with Martin Freeman of ‘The Office’ fame as Dr. Watson, in this great drama that premiered last night (25.07.10)

Inglis Barracks - An Education

As many have found before Inglis Barracks is incredibly versatile, with huge potential for filming and photography. In An Education some of the residential rooms within the Officer Mess were used to double as a cheap 1960's hotel just outside of Heathrow...

RocknRolla - South Dock, London Docklands

London has never looked cooler than in the Guy Richie directed film RocknRolla. Check out the backdrop to this location behind the huge 70 ft yacht!! Such a great scene and it used the London scenery that is available on British Waterways property to its max!

In The Loop - Swakeley's House (in Vyners House)

One of the funniest films of the last couple of years was In The Loop. The official offices were created in the modern office section of Vyners house within the grounds of Swakeleys House. We think more people should see this place as it holds loads of filming possibilities!

4,3,2,1 - Westfield Shopping Centre

One of Londons up and coming directors, Noel Clarke, wrote directed and acted in this action packed film. Based at Westfield for three days the filming brought some upheaval, but the production were really happy with the outcome and the shopping centre loved the publicity.

ITV's Identity hits the screens tonight

A major new ITV drama series starts tonight and we at Unitbase.co.uk are very excited about some of the locations on show. The show starring Keeley Hawes of Ashes to Ashes fame and Queer of Folk’s Aidan Gillen, are part of an elite police unit that is set up to combat identity related crime.

The main office location that was used for the filming was Thomas More Square, an office complex in Wapping, London. The production took over a whole floor of the building where they recreated their special unit police headquarters. The production required a modern, high spec office location with London City views and this is exactly what they got! We are really excited to see how the production utilised this great location, a location that has been used in many productions before, such as ’28 Weeks Later’ and many television commercials.

The production was on site for 2 months whereby the crew built the set into the fabric of the building. What must also be mentioned is the fact that the filming was able to be carried out while other companies were carrying out a normal day’s business within the same building! This is a fantastic achievement and here at Unitbase.co.uk we were really happy to be able to make this happen!

UK television and film production is on the up and we are really proud to be a facilitating part in it! The event was for a high profile make-up brand that needed a high spec, top end penthouse to launch their new products. With performers such as Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel, this iconic London theatre is steeped in history. Now Unitbase.co.uk is excited to announce its exclusive representation of all filming and photography at the Hackney Empire. This stunning theatre built in 1901 undertook a huge refurbishment in 2004, which has resulted in the location having a selection of great filming and photographic locations!

After a fantastic four years of managing all filming enquiries at Thomas More Square, a prime Land Securities site, in Wapping, Unitbase.co.uk have been given the privilege of looking after more of Land Securities properties as possible film locations.

It is that time of year again when all the awards are won for the fantastic films that have been made during the last 12 months. It has been a fantastic and groundbreaking year, with the likes of 'Avatar', 'The Hurt Locker', 'Precious' and 'Up' all being widely received as some of the best films of 2010!

The British Film industry has been represented brilliantly with some fantastic talent both young and old! 'An Education' and its leading actress, Carey Mulligan has drawn high praise and her performance which has won her nominations for both a Bafta and an Oscar! At last night’s Bafta’s ceremony she was the lucky recipient of the Best Actress role, while also being up for best newcomer. We predict a bright future for this young, British Starlet!

While Ms Mulligan was filming the award winning ‘An Education’, Unitbase.co.uk was on hand to help out with its production by sourcing a location for a one week shoot. Inglis Barracks was perfect for scenes were based at a Heathrow hotel and to get this period style look, Inglis was perfect! The officer's mess at Inglis Barracks was used for these scenes and Camilla Stephenson, the location manager, thought it was a perfect location!

Unitbase.co.uk was also involved in some of the other British success stories of last night’s Bafta’s. ‘In The Loop’ was nominated for Outstanding British Film, but unfortunately lost out to the amazing ‘Fish Tank’ Nevertheless, Operations Director of Unitbase.co.uk, James Crawley oversaw ‘In The Loop’ utilise some brilliant locations a the Swakleys House, a magnificent manor house that doubled for areas of 10 Downing Street and some UK governmental offices. ‘In The Loop’ also built a huge set in the studio at Inglis Barracks, which became home to some American CIA offices and Mr Soprano himself, James Gandolfini.

2010 is off and running and to start the year we are very excited to present to the industry, The Royal Haslar Hospital, under the Exclusive representation of Unitbase.co.uk Ltd. Located within 1 and a half hours from London, this recently vacated NHS hospital has so much on offer it is truly staggering! With a fully dressed hospital on site, plus nightingale style wards and even a full A&E unit, your production will be spoilt for choice! The site has over 150 buildings which means you could shoot a whole production here and we really mean it! The location has halls, gyms, corridors, wards, offices buildings, town houses, air raid shelters, dressed surgery’s, empty roads, a water tower, industrial buildings, plus workshops, set build space and storage facilities. The Original Hospital,

An imposing and institutional style building, greats you as you enter the Royal Haslar Hospital. The building spreads itself impressively over the centre of the site and could double as a school, prison, military barracks, or of course....a hospital! The institutional style building can be used however you wish and will provide a great backdrop for a feature film or TV production!

Empty Hospital Wards,

With dressed and vacant hospital wards, the scope for a production with a medical theme is vast. Whether your production needs a period location, or something more contemporary, The Royal Haslar has the lot. After being built in the 18^th Century for injured sailors and marines, the hospital has been constantly added to and so, whatever look you need it will be on this site!

Accident and Emergency Hospital

Not an A&E ward, not even an A&E wing, the Royal Haslar Hospital has its very own A&E Hospital! Starting with its own emergency drive-through unloading area, the hospital is simply a fully dressed A&E set ready to go! Main reception desks, waiting rooms and treatment booths all remain in place and would be ready for a production to start immediately!

Out Patients

Such a big hospital meant that nearly all facilities and treatments were offered. Now it is closed, we have to opportunity to offer these great filming locations, such as X-Ray rooms, consultation rooms, plaster rooms, treatment rooms, day wards, fracture clinics...the list goes on (and on).

Officers Mess

With a military past this hospital looks, in part, just like a military barracks or base. The site has a medical mess, which could double as an officer’s mess with ease. Large living spaces with open fires, bars, residential rooms and long corridors these buildings are great all rounder’s! Surrounded by ornate lawns and stunning sea views, these outbuildings provide that something extra!

To celebrate Christmas and our last newsletter of 2009, we thought we would have our own Christmas chart! You can forget X-Factor and the annual battle for the Christmas number one, the chart that really counts is our very own top ten locations of 2009! So carry on reading to see what locations made it into our chart and of course we unveil the Unitbase number one location of 2009!

Christmas Chart: No. 10 - Wood Wharf
Wood Wharf is a relatively new location on our database, only being available since the summer! However during the last 6 months the location has been very popular, with a range of options and great parking on site. Not to mention the great views of Canary Wharf!

Christmas Chart: No. 9 - Southeastern Trains
At number 9, is the Southeastern train network. A very film friendly operator, who over the last year have enjoyed hosting such productions as Spooks and Ashes to Ashes, both of which used Waterloo East and various train carriages.

Christmas Chart: No. 8 - Camden Lock
A London landmark makes it into our chart at number 8, the one and only Camden Lock! The British Waterways owned location has been represented by Unitbase.co.uk for a number of years now and in 2009 the location was no less popular, featuring in commercials for Microsoft and Ben Sherman.

Christmas Chart: No. 7 - West India Quay
Another British Waterways location makes it into the top ten, with West India Quay. An incredibly popular location with all types of productions. This year it can be seen in the Christmas commercial for Marks and Spencer. The production, featuring Myleene Klass, constructed an ice rink on the quay side and shot for the stunning Canary Wharf backdrop.

Christmas Chart: No. 6 - Bentley Priory
Just outside the top 5 is Bentley Priory. This location has had a popular last few months with Holby City and Eastenders both utilising the great locations that are on offer here. Eastenders actually spent a week at the location and used the grand Officers Mess to its full extent.

Christmas Chart: No. 5 - Grand Union Canal
Starting us off in the top 5 is the Grand Union Canal. Here were feature the beautiful Little Venice area, which is actually where the Grand Union Canal meets the Regents Canal. Popular productions such as Criminal Justice and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, have both used great locations along the Grand Union Canal.

Christmas Chart: No. 4 - Regents Canal
British Waterways has been popular this year and at number 4 is the Regents Canal and is the last showing for our waterside locations. Just piping the Grand Union canal by tallying just one more booking, the Regents Canal has been popular especially in East London around Broadway Market. Feature films such as Harry Brown and Chatroom, have both utilised the unique backdrops that the Regents Canal provides.

Christmas Chart: No. 3 - Brent Cross
We are now getting the serious end of the chart now and at number 3 is Brent Cross Shopping Centre. Brent Cross has been a consistently popular filming location and we are very proud to have it on our books! With a great film friendly management staff, filming at the centre has, and will continue to be a pleasure for all productions.

Christmas Chart: No. 2 - Southern Railway
What a popular year for Southern Railway! Finding its way to number 2 in our Christmas countdown, so many productions have used their trains and platforms. One of the more high profile shoots on the Southern Railway network was the Woody Allen Summer project. The production hired two carriages and spent the day going to a fro, between London and Brighton.

Christmas Chart: No. 1 - Inglis Barracks
And finally...at number 1, is the fantastic Inglis Barracks! 2009 has been another great year for the site, with many productions utilising its production offices and set build spaces. If you have not seen this place yet, then you should come and see it in 2010, we will be happy to show you around. PLus, we are pretty confident that it will have something for everyone! Its a cracker!

"How to Look Good Naked" as Gok Wan hits Westfield London!

Gok Wan spent a whole week advising women how to look good naked at Westfield London! The infamous Gok Pod arrived on site and was on site for 5 days as excitement reached fever pitch at the centre!

The show is focused on taking women and making them feel good about themselves through revolutionising their wardrobe's! Of course there is no shortage of great shops to choose from at Westfield London!

New John Lennon Drama filmed at Bentley Priory

Blast Films have been commissioned by the BBC to produce a new drama detailing the life of the great John Lennon.

Unitbase.co.uk were on hand to provide a great location for a three day shoot. The now decommissioned RAF Bentley Priory was the chosen location because of its fantastic architecture and stunning interior period decoration.

The production company capitalised on this fantastic property and based their whole production at the decommissioned RAF base for almost a week, with catering, wardrobe and production depatments all on site.

Christopher Eccleston is the actor hired to play the great Lennon himself and we think this is a fantastic choice of cast!

Westfield London has today announced the exciting news to the film industry that leading location agency Unitbase.co.uk has been appointed by the shopping centre to manage all filming and photography taking place at the West London site.

Westfield London Features in it's First Film

We have all seen and heard about the fantastic London landmark, Westfield London. It has been covered in our newspapers and featured on national radio and television shows. It has also been used in two high profile commercials, however it is now about to hit the big screen and will be featured in a new UK feature Film “4.3.2.1” written and directed by Noel Clarke from KiDULTHOOD and AdULTHOOD fame.

The film is an action adventure produced in collaboration with NBC Universal, featuring 4 girls over 3 days, in 2 cities, each with 1 chance to change their lives dramatically and forever! The film will be shot throughout London and New York as well as at the world famous Pinewood Studios.

Westfield London is where the film begins and it is where the four girls are all together for the first time. The director being from West London himself, really wanted the iconic London location to be included knowing that such a stunning architectural building will look amazing on the big screen!

The filming took place over three days in various locations throughout the centre, with thanks to Westfield London and their exclusive filming agents Unitbase.co.uk Ltd, this was able to happen, all within the centre’s opening hours.
